Mediscan Systems made its foray into the world of medical scanning in 1982, at a time when this sector in India was still considered uncharted waters. The centre was established in Chennai by Dr.S Suresh and Dr. Indrani Suresh, pioneers in ultrasound diagnostics in South India. The objective of the founders was to provide high quality scan services, accurate diagnostics and reports, providing these services to the underprivileged.

Since its establishment, Mediscan has moved from being just a scanning centre to providing specialized services in foetal care medicine. Today, Mediscan is recognized as a referral centre for Antenatal diagnosis and Foetal therapy, not just across India, but from all of South Asia. The centre today is called for its expertise by hospitals across Tamil Nadu for specialized diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.

Apart from its diagnostic scanning services, Mediscan also contributes extensively to research in fetal malformations, prenatal diagnosis and fetal therapy

Our Story

Mediscan’s entry into the diagnostic scene was linked closely to the career graph of its founder Dr.Suresh. South India would not have got its first scanning centre, if Dr.Suresh had not changed his plan of becoming a surgeon and instead took up diagnostic scanning as a profession!

In the early 1980s, a medical scan centre was unheard of in South India. There was no telling if a pregnant woman was carrying a healthy baby or not, among many other such situations. This was when Dr.Suresh came up with the idea of a centre that would prevent human suffering through accurate medical diagnostics. Battling the challenges of initial training difficulties to investing in equipment was not easy.

The early days were the days of experimentation - Mediscan offered a free scanning facility to all the patients of Kasturiba Gandhi Govt. Hospital. The centre’s reports were then cross-checked with the regular diagnosis by doctors. Mediscan gradually evolved into South India’s first scanning centre of repute in the hands of Dr.Suresh and his wife Indrani Suresh.

The medical fraternity acknowledged that ultrasound scanning was indispensable for prenatal diagnosis and fetal therapy. Mediscan had finally arrived.

An ultrasound is a diagnostic tool that shows the image of the internal body structures such as a foetus, internal organs, muscles and more. Ultrasounds are also used to detect the flow of blood to organs. This diagnostic technique is used today to check on the health of the foetus or medical issues within the body, not visible to the eye.

We have developed unique skills in the field of interventional ultrasound such as liver biopsies, drainage of abscesses, renal biopsies and more. Our expertise in Intraoperative ultrasound for neurosonography, liver, and biliary surgery has immensely helped surgeons.

Mediscan has been the first in the field to offer Foetal Medicine Services since 1987. Our centre provides supportive services to aid diagnosis and foetal therapy, counselling services and a department of dysmorphology and clinical genetics. Our expertise in this area has led us to become a referral centre from across the world for antenatal diagnosis and foetal therapy.

This department has seen many firsts - the country’s first intrauterine transfusion for Rh isoimmunisation was done in 1991 at Mediscan. The first thoraco-amniotic shunt in India was performed by us in 1995. We are also proud to have done the first arterial embolisation of an acardiac twin in 1993. Our successful foetal procedures have helped many mothers realize their dream of having a normal child.
